Help Our Dogs & Cats
Find Homes

Happy Endings, Updates  &  Nice Notes

March 2015  Hey Mirna,  Rue is doing well and is a happy girl She loves the front window where she can sit and watch the birds And I've
caught her and CJ frolicking. Cracks me up that she runs him around the house  Laura

February 2015  Ezmarelda

  February 2015  Pippy
Our sweet little Pippy hit the jackpot. This one homeless pooch was found as stray in a rural county. Amanda spotted Pippy giving Mindy Drayer and Harrison Hove lots of kisses on our Mingle Preview and the rest, as they say, is history. Thanks to Ch 4 for helping our homeless dogs find homes ! And thanks to awesome foster Mom Judy Fedderke for fostering her.

Hi Dawn,
Nix is definitely a part of our family!!  He has taken to Jaret the most ~ probably because Jaret is the only one who has not made Nix do something that he doesn't want to do.  Ha!  Nix has also become a chow hound!!!  He definitely knows my work schedule and wants to eat by 5:30 every morning....even weekends!!  I remember you telling me that Nix does not beg.  Well, guess what?  He started begging when my mom came to visit.  He actually put his little paws up on her lap at the dinner table.  He associates Kevin with food, too.  So funny!  He still likes his vienna sausages and CHICKEN!
Obedience school is hysterical.  Let's just say he is not going to earn the "top dog" award.  However, he sure is cute!  We had our first experience yesterday with Nix in the snow.  In fact, I had a snow day.  I think he likes curling up on the couch more than playing in the snow.

Nix still loves to go for walks!  Kevin takes him for short "runs", too.  I was so puzzled a couple of weeks ago because all he wanted to do was run when I took him for a walk.  Thank you, Kevin!  You know how my husband wasn't as convinced that we needed a dog.  You should hear him talk to Nix.  He is so good to him.  That makes me so happy.

Nix still has his "quirks".  He definitely picks and chooses when he wants to be near us.  All Jesse wants to do is snuggle Nix, but we have told him to give Nix some space.  He will definitely come around.  Nix will act so happy to see me when I come home from work, but then he will run from me.  We know that he just has to learn that he can trust us. My mom calls now to ask about Nix.  She spent a week with us about a week ago and got to spend a lot of "quality time" with him.  Like I said, he is definitely part of us now.

Take Care!!  Jeanne

Hi Mirna,
Thank you for the Columbus Dog Connection newsletter! Walter is thriving! His eye is all better. He weighs about 20 pounds. His hair is growing. He has his own Christmas ornaments, and he enjoys napping with us on the couch near the fireplace. He and Max are close buddies, and I have a doggy nanny coming in on my long days to let them out, play etc. Walter still gets into everything, but he is learning and responds well to positive reinforcement. We walk almost daily around the park. So fun because he loves to mingle with the other dogs. He sleeps with Max and me every night!  Thanks again,  Kathy

I wanted to let you and the rest of the team at Columbus Dog Connection know that we had to put our sweet boy Benny to sleep yesterday after learning that he had metastatic cancer throughout his abdomen. We knew when we adopted him as an older dog that our time with him might be short, and even though we are heartbroken over his death, we just feel so thankful to have had nearly two wonderful years with him. He was such a good boy and brought so much happiness to our lives. We already miss his thumping tail every time we walked into the room and his big open-mouthed grin.

He was so big, gentle, and steady...his hugs had a calming, soothing effect on us after even the most stressful days. (He seemed to know this and allowed us to love on him to our hearts' content.) It was fun to see him really blossom during his time with us -- after getting his teeth fixed and his arthritis and other health issues under better control, you could tell he just felt good and was loving life. He (and we) loved walks in the park by our house, rawhide chews and peanut butter kongs, exploring in our backyard, soaking in our baby pool or any body of water (not so much swimming -- more of a "flop" in the water, haha), and just hanging out with us. I attached a few of our favorite photos -- up until the end of his life he was a happy and healthy dog. Thank you for rescuing this special boy and allowing him to be part of our family! We are forever grateful.

           Sept 2014

Here are some of the promised pictures of Cole's adventures this summer. He has been a walking machine, sometimes walking for ten miles a day, especially when we were on vacation.
We rented a house in Charleston so that he could come with us, and he had a blast touring the sights. He got to walk a ton in Savannah too, so he's been to some really lovely cities.
There are a couple pictures of him in Charleston, including at a dog beach we found, as well as some shots in famous locations in Savannah. There is also a picture of him taking a walk with our cat, Max, who you probably remember. He also has a toy we call Red Dog, which he absolutely adores, and no group of pictures would be complete without Red Dog. He's best friends with Zoe, our other dog, and they often will curl up together at night. He's so charming that even our pizza guy brings treats for him. He's really settled into becoming a wonderful member of our family, and we couldn't be happier to have him.

June, 2014  Pippa, pregnant and bursting in the dead of the January 2014 cold snap and at a rural shelter.  Fostered and pups whelped by phenomenal Columbus Dog Connection Foster Family  Laura & Rachel Blum.  New Mom Leatha says: "I could not be happier. It makes my heart swells every time I come home and she does her happy dance because she is so happy to see me. My daughter was at my house yesterday when I got home an asked if Pippa does that happy dance each time I come hone and I said yep. It is so cute."

Macy, March 2014
Hi Laura! Just want to let you know Macy continues to be a most excellent girl! She now eats treats out of my UPS mans hands when he comes . She has recently decided that tennis balls are fun to chase , so she likes me to throw them down the barn aisle while I am working and she brings it back 50% of the time - when she's done - she goes and buries it in another stall in the saw dust - a typical terrier move !! LOL ! She enjoys walking around discovering all the new smells ( dead worms are a fav :o) ) that spring brings out!! Hope you have found homes for all those adorable pups and mom!!   Kate  April 2014

Laura,
Laura, Macy is an absolute gem!
She is fitting right in with my gang - warming up quickly to anyone who visits. She is much more relaxed when people come over to visit - she's right up there with the others looking for treats ! More reports as things progress!! Kate

            Pam & Cali, March 2014

Wags & Woofs form Pam & Baci !

We are doing great. She is following me from room to room without coaxing.  Is sleeping thru the night.  We wake up about 6:30am to kisses and nuzzles and then go out and do our business.  There have been NO accidents in the house!!!  Now, she does have the attention span of a gnat when we are outside, everything is a distraction.  I have switched to a retractable lead just for when we are going potty—she does better when she controls where her ‘spot’ will be. But other than that, she is walking beautifully on a regular lead.

She is adjusting really well to her work schedule.  As a matter of fact, part of her new vocabulary is, ‘Ready for work’?  a phrase that I must NOT say unless we are ready to walk out the door or she sits at the bathroom door and howls at me to hurry up!  All 3 dogs are eating on the same twice a day schedule, and all 3 dogs must at some point all rotate to eat out of the other dog’s bowl---as you well know, there is always something better in that other bowl.  She is happily spending her work day on a pillow under the desk with regular breaks for play and potty.  She and Pippi are beginning to bond really well and Misia seems fascinated with her to the point of obsessively staring at her for part of the day—Who knows why.

She has met the Puggle from 2 doors down, Sophie.  They seem to be smitten with each other.  And today she has a play date with the ShiZu-Poodle mixes from across the street.  Daisy and Bella have a fenced yard and have invited her over to run around.  Last night she went to my massage appointment with me.  She was invited to come along and took up residence under the table for the appointment--
and has been invited back by all the other therapists.

She has been handed to and handled by at least a dozen people this week—it is socialization boot camp!  She has been great.  Cautious, but not scared. And always happy to come back to me and give kisses.  Which brings me to her name.  I flirted with keeping Cali—but ‘tried out’ several options.  In the end she choose her own name. after giving some appreciative kisses I said ‘Baci Baci’ which is Italian for kisses (say, Ba Chee).  She immediately sat up, pricked her ears, and barked.  I tried it several more times over the course of the day and got the same interested response.  So, Baci it is!  It seems to fit her well—it sounds a little spunky and saucy, which is the personality that I am beginning to see.  So it has been a big week for the little dog.  I couldn’t be happier.  Give us just a little more time and we will be ready for you to come and visit us if you would like.

Dec 2013
Hi Mirna, "Zoey" is the former Annie, who is doing just great with us. She is a doll. Rudy and Zoey are playing hard and just doing great things together.
Zoey has put "spunk" into Rudy that I have not seen for some time. They run through the house together, tire each other out, and rest together.
Zoey sleeps through the night, knows "outside", "sit", "down", "back" (at the gate door), "come", "drop" and many more commands! She and Rudy walk
together each morning and she does obey well!  We have an appt. with Dr. White this week just for a check over for Zoey. I want to thank you for
helping me out, again. I could not think of going elsewhere for a wonderful dog. You are great with what you do!
Many thanks to a great resource who really does care about these great animals!
That's YOU! Beth

May 2013   Valerie, a sweet and disgustingly cute mix, was found as a stray during a search for a lost dog. She was really scared and infested with fleas. Based on her behavior, it was very obvious that she had been an outside dog. She was not housebroken, would fight being on a leash, and had no manners inside a house. Well, she is a smart cookie and soon learned how to be a member of a family. The day that she went on a home visit to meet her forever family, she started having back and neck pain, and by the following morning, she was dragging her hind legs. She was immediately rushed to the vet's office and after a month of medication, her condition never allowed her to return to normal. Surgery and intense recovery was recommended. She had a ruptured disc. Surgery was performed the following morning, and Valerie is now in week three of recovery. She is doing amazingly well, due mostly to the great care she is getting (in addition to the surgery of course). Her surgery and vet visits end up costing close to $3,500. She is worth every penny of it. She is a young little girl that will now lead a normal life in a loving home with a canine sister and two human mommies. CDC is asking for your help in raising the funds to cover her medical bills.

"Wanted to share this happy photo of JT with the @[106318147542:Columbus Dog Connection]. We adopted her 1 year and 3 months ago and she is the absolute joy of our lives!!"

Ronda,
I wanted to let you know that over this past week Calvin and Hobbes have really progressed. Calvin is becoming a regular on the bed at night for some petting. Hobbes joins him but it was just tonight that he allowed me to pet him...and he licked me in return! We're so happy that they are seeming to adjust to their new family finally. Tonight Calvin jumped up on the couch while I was watching a movie with the kids and he sat on each ones' laps. They were so delighted to pet him and you could even see Calvin smile. I wish I had taken a picture to send you.

I thank you for your understanding when I called you last week wondering if the cats were happy here and ever going to start adjusting. I think they're finally starting to trust us. They certainly have learned when it's time for their wet food!

Thanks for taking care of our boys,
Karen,  May 2012

Oct 2011  Maddy ("Margie" before her adoption) is a

Columbus Dog Connection success story.
She came to live with me in August 2000 and is still going strong!

I recommend Columbus Dog Connection to anyone I know in the Columbus
area who is looking to adopt a dog.  Jill Zimmerman

Hi Kim,

Today we are celebrating Roxy's "birthday" or her adoption day NINE years
ago today.  She was about 9 months old at that time, so she is turning 10
in a few months.
I cannot even begin to tell you how much joy she brings me and my family.
I'd like to think we do the same for her.

Just wanted to share!  And THANK YOU for your help making our connection.

January 2011 Hi Mirna, Happy New Year. I hope your holidays were awesome. I just thought I would share a couple of pictures of Carmi. He is doing great. I don't know if him and Dylan will ever be great playing buddies but they get along without any problems. They jump up on the couch together and bark at everyone passing by the window together! We love him and he has fit right into our family. He gets along with all the other dogs in our extended family too. No one can resist his cute little face. As you can see he DID NOT like the reindeer antlers Caiti and I put on him-but he let us doo it! They didn't stay on long. Hope you enjoy the pictures. Take Care. Toni

Jessica, He is doing great. We had him groomed

a couple of weeks ago and he did really well.

We signed him up for some private training

lessons and he
is progressing pretty quickly. He is a master at

sit, down, and heel. We are working on stay,

which he is doing pretty well at so far. He goes

 to puppy day
care twice a week to socialize with other dogs.

So far, no complaints. I think if we have made

it this far, we are home free.

Oct 2011  Just an update on Anderson. He is doing so well these days!
He went to Prairie Oaks Metro Park this weekend and  swam for the first time. He finally lets me take pictures of him and about time too!!
He still loves to play ball and gets so excited when his neighbor "furry friends" come out and play. He is one happy dog!  Maggie McGinty

Jessica: I just wanted to drop you a note to "THANK YOU" again for adopting to Tom & me, the very best (and by far the cutest) dog in the entire world.
Mulligan (formerly known as Ruigi) is an absolute joy to live with and we are so blessed that he is a member of our family. Tom's mom has recently been admitted to a nursing home and he goes to visit with Mulligan - he's a hit with the older folks and staff alike. Unfortunately, he's now competing with "Pepper" - mom's 23 lb cat for some of our attention and let me tell you, he is not one bit happy about it. We're hoping a truce will be called between the two of them...Anyway, it's been one year this week that he came to stay - we'll be a Woofstock if you have it again this August - just let me know the date!
Forever in your debt.... -Carol & Tom Russell
Sept 2011
The girls love playing with Fiona - Tug-o-war and fetch are favorite games! Thank you so much for helping us find such a wonderful pet - she is sweet and cuddly at times and fun and playful at other times! We LOVE her. I was wondering where you got the pig toy that you sent with her - Brady and Fiona BOTH love this town and it is slowly getting ripped apart.
We would love to get a couple more! Thanks again for giving Fiona so much love in your home - she is a great addition to our family!

Lisa here is a small story about our family and new addition Luke.
We are a family who had labs for fourteen years and sadly our Lizzie passed away on Valentines day of this year. We found ourselves with grief and not knowing what to do without a dog. We thought about turning to a breeder but then realized how many dogs were out there in need of homes. In looking on the internet we came across Columbus Dog Connection. This is where we found Luke, who is now enjoying his new home and has brought great joy to our family. Luke loves his new toys, naps on the furniture and big bones. Our family is so grateful to have been able to adopt such a wonderful dog. Thanks to the CDC for all they do for these animals.     Cynthia and family, Dublin OH

Good Morning Mirna,
Carmine has stolen all of our hearts. He is so sweet. Dyland and Carmine are forging a bond. Neither one seems jealous of the other.
Dylan has taught Carmine how to stand at the front window and bark at everyone going by on the sidewalk. We had never heard Carmine bark-HILARIOUS!

I have taken the dogs on a walk through the neighborhood. Carmine does pull but we will work on that. Dylan did the same when we got him.
I have also taken them on a walk through the woods behind our house. Carmine loves that as much as Dylan. LOTS of animal smells & unfortunately for Carmine sticky burrs too-those aren't so much fun when you stick your face in a pile of them!

I didn't need to put a dog bed in the room for Carmine--He hasn't been on it once--He decided the first night our bed was his bed!
Even Dylan was in bed with us last night durning the storm. I guess you can truly say our lives have goon to the dogs!!
We are all so glad we added Carmine to our family-he fits right in.

Hello, Cindy and Ron, I hope you are doing well. Levi and Akii continue to be absolute joys in our lives. They're still very active and in great health and spirits. I am so grateful for Columbus Dog Connection and the wonderful care you gave our boys before we found them. I have again chosen to donate to CDC for my Community Gift pledge through Harvard. Please let me know if it doesn't come through.
Kind regards and thank you for all the amazing work you do.

Hi Karen and Steve,
I want to let you know that Mindy's mother passed away today. I had Krew over there every day. Her mother would hold Krew on her lap for hours. Krew is a excellent dog I would take 10 more of him.

Hi Mirna,
Timmy and Jasmyne were hanging out on our bed. See how much they look alike? It’s going really well—she is part of our cat “herd” now. The three of them hang out together and like to play. All 3 meet us at the door. Lassie and Jas play with the “bird” together, and Jas and Timmy like to chase the laser pointer. Timmy and Jas also like to drink dripping water in our hot tub, and Lassie sits on the edge and watches them. It’s funny—it’s like a bunch of cats at a watering hole. Nobody is hissing or seems upset at all. Nobody is acting territorial. Jasmyne did such a good job of understanding how to fit in—Lassie is the cat in charge and Jasmyne showed her some respect, and Lassie has now accepted her. We feel grateful that this all went so easily and quickly. Our only challenge is trying to groom Jasmyne—she switches from sweet to a snarling crazy cat in seconds. We’re slowing getting there. Otherwise, she seems relaxed and comfortable in our house.

Hi Jessica,
Just thought I'd give you an update on Lincoln. Things are still going fantastically well. He is eating 3 cups of food twice a day. He is getting in 2 good walks a day, or 1 walk and then time in the dog run that's here at our apartments.
Ryan's mom sent us booties that she got for her dog (they live in Maine); her dog would not take a step in them. I was sure Lincoln would not like them, but I was wrong! Ryan took him out to the dog run with them on last night, and he said Lincoln was running around like a nut! Unfortunately the booties are bright orange... ha ha!

The only issue we're having is with the cat. She still stays in the second bedroom; before Lincoln was here she was pretty sociable - for a cat. We just haven't had the time to work with them like we would have liked. Last night we did though - Ryan held Siri, and I had Lincoln on the leash with the gentle leader. I think it helped, because this morning Siri came into the living room and managed to get on top of the back of the chair (where she likes to look out the window) without Lincoln noticing (he was on the sofa). It was pretty funny - you could see the wheels turning - Lincoln kept sniffing and looking around: "I don't see the cat, but I can SMELL the cat!" He did find her after a few minutes, so I put the gentle leader and leash on him, and we stayed on the sofa for a half hour or so, and all in all, Siri spent a couple of hours in the living room. Ryan is sure they will be friends some day! I will just be happy when Siri feels comfortable enough to be where she wants to in the house.

He is a really good dog, and we are so, so happy you guys rescued him and worked with him.

Hi there! So here is a picture of Speedy on his "place" board at training class. He is still looking away from the camera but he's holding his "place" command!! I just wanted to tell you how great he is doing in class! He started out pretty freaked out...doing a lot of submissive rolling onto his back when he didn't understand what to do. But as he is figuring things out he is getting more and more confident and it is soooo amazing to see!!! I'm so proud of him and so happy for him at the same time that he is getting to experience his "dogginess" and leaving his fear behind! After his basic training, I'm hoping to keep him going with some agility training....that ability of his to jump 6+ feet into the air will come in handy...I just have a feeling that he is going to love it!!! He continues to be his loving self in his down time. My daughter commented the other day comparing Speedy to one of our other dogs, Sammy..."mom, Sammy usually just receives our love when we cuddle him, but Speedy always receives love AND loves us back"....and it is so true! We hope to see you soon!! Lyen

Dear Karen, I just wanted to give you a quick update on Miles. Miles seems to be doing very well. We had some company over last night with teenage boys and he did really well with the noise in the household. He was friendly but also very protective and watchful. He is so sweet. He slept really well and didn't even make noise when Dan got up early to run. Instead he just quietly waited for me to get up.
We went for several walks today and he met my in laws. We also left him home in his den for 2 hours. I think he was glad for the break so he could nap. I worry he isn't getting enough sleep as he always seems to be watching us. He is such a wonderful dog and already seems to know his name. Samantha and I are somewhat sad we changed his name as we think he looks like a Cliff but he looks like a Miles too. I can't express how much we love him already. Thank you so much for letting us adopt him. I'm going to try to attach a picture of him and hope you get it.
We hope you are having a great trip.  Sabrina

Cacy,
Evie is settling in well. The kids love her so much. Nathan can’t leave a room without calling her to follow him. He was busy explaining his hot wheels collection to her yesterday! You can imagine the look on her face.. Lily likes to cover Evie with a blanket and give her a pillow when she is napping ! My kids are now more encouraged than ever to pick up toys off the floor. Evie decapitated a Spiderman figure that was left out and she’s still figuring out the dog stuffed toys from the kid stuffed toys. Evie loves the school bus stop in the morning..So many kids to smell and many of the parents bring their dogs along too!

Finnegan warmed up to Evie very quickly. She’s the perfect personality match for him. He’s definitely the alpha and she has no problem with that. She even waits for him before she jumps off the deck to go in the yard-it is too cute!
Wallie-Girl, the cat, is staying hidden for now. We have a gate up at the basement entrance so Evie can look but not chase Wallie-Girl. She is very interested in the furry creature that she catches glimpses of from time to time…Wallie-Girl is not as interested in meeting Evie…I’m sure it will work itself out and in no time they will coexist in harmony..

Thanks again for all you do for CDC. You are a great person with a great heart and they are lucky to have you fostering and loving any dog that is fortunate enough to come to your house! We’ll keep you updated.

Hi Kellie,
In December, 1998, we adopted a dog from the Columbus Dog Connection. Her name on her adoption papers was "Sara." Although that was a fine name, we changed her name to "Delilah." I don't even recall the name of the lady in NE Columbus who had the dog, but Delilah had a brother too, and his name was Sampson. We chose Delilah & we're so happy we did!

Today, we had to put this wonderful dog down. It is amongst the saddest times in my/our life. I have buried my Mom & Dad & a sister, but somehow, when it comes to an animal I come disjointed.

Delilah was a Lab/Doberman mix and one of THE smartest dogs that I've EVER owned!! She had an enormous sassy disposition but was sweet. She had a command of over 200 words that she could respond to as well as remembering "things" as they happened to her. She had the intelligence of at least a 2 year old child. She could sit, lie down, shake left, shake right, twirl around, run, fetch.....she knew all of the basic commands but what was so unusual about her is that she understood English. We noticed how bright she was when we threw a blanket over her head and watched her get out. She did that with ease. She was able to get a treat out of a glass upside down in about 2 seconds. When she was thirsty and her water dish was near or close to empty, she would take the gallon jug next to her water dish and toss it across the floor to get your attention. I've seen her trot into the bedroom with her food bowl and toss it at my feet. (that didn't happen too often, but it did happen a few times)

After we brought her home, we barricaded her in a kitchen space between the kitchen counters and stove. She was so smart that she figured out a way to get out of there. She figured out that she could crawl up the wooden doors, over the counter & out to freedom! We couldn't figure out how she did it, so we video taped her!!!! Delilah was truly amazing! She had traveled a lot and was always so excited to "go bye bye" .... she knew the difference between "going bye bye to Virginia" versus "going bye bye to the Vet." Her ears would go down when it was time to go to the Vet! She had a command of the English language and knew the differences between pizza, peanut butter, steak, hot dog, etc. She knew people....everybody WE knew this dog knew, also!! SHE knew their names. She was as Lassie was.....if she came barking to tell or show you something....I'd say, "show me." And away she'd go....trotting over to whatever it was that she was trying to communicate to you! I cannot say enough at how smart this dog happened to be.

In 2007, I had a girlfriend who came to stay at our house during her cancer treatments. Delilah never left her side because she knew she was very sick and she could sense it. Ahhh, the dog could sense anything! Delilah was able to sense when we almost lost my girlfriend, right on the couch. It was Delilah that alerted me! She could also sense when person was not on the "up & up." She would voice her opinion and was always right. I learned to listen to her; she was always right. I, too, have had medical issues (disabled now) and she was always with me by my side. Delilah, herself, had many medical issues. She had tumors on her chest, both lobes. The first surgery removed them, but in six (6) months, they were back again. Her last surgery was in December, 2009. She had had more tumors taken away. Actually, she and I were recovering on the bed at the same time!!!! She never E V E R left my side. Then the tumors started growing again. We no longer had the money to have any additional surgery for her. I have been out of work since 2007 myself and times have been rough. We ran up a credit card and allowed Delilah to live at least 18 months longer than originally thought. We've had Delilah into the Vet's office several times to check her tumors & always ensure her shots were up-to-date.

Today, Monday, August 23, 2010, we had to say good-bye to her. We had the Vet come to the house as I cannot mentally handle this event. Delilah was pretty much out of it when the doorbell rang. She gave a raspy 'woof' and slowly proceeded to the door. Lisa Rogers, Westerville Animal Clinic, has been our Vet for many years, prior to Delilah, too. Discussion centered around where we administer the shot. While we were discussing this, Delilah proceeded to lie down patiently next to my old Edison Victrola in the hallway at the end of the foyer. She was telling US where she wanted to leave this earth and move on to The Rainbow.

Weeping, and still weeping, the shot was gently given and she went to sleep. God, I miss her and am weeping as I type this. My husband carried her out to Lisa's vehicle ---- a big 6 ft 5 in man weeping all the way out and back. We all stood in the doorway; my husband, my daughter, Brittany, and myself weeping. We are feeling the loss.....a tremendous loss!!!! I don't know what I'm going to do!!! I lost a dog, true.....but I lost my best friend who understood me through thick and thin!!!! She was, indeed, the smartest dog I EVER EVER had!!!!!

Thank you for allowing her to be a part of our family! I see another one just like her out on your website, but don't know if we could now. Thank you for your organization and providing us with the best dog E V E R!!!!! The next dog will have some mighty big paws to fill, but I know somewhere there's another one like her!
Sincerely,    Linda Hart-Hyde, Paul F Hyde, Brittany Hyde

Wendy was pulled from Greenriver Animal Shelter in Kentucky because no one wanted her - she was going to be euthanized.

Hi Jessica...
Wendy...now known as Maggie....is doing great. She is a super dog..exactly what I was looking for! She loves our other dogs and tries to get them to play. They are older and pretty set in their ways so don't know quite what to do with her. We have tossed around getting another small dog so she will have a friend who will play with her, but four dogs would be a bit much.

She is a traveler, having been to Chicago and to Michigan several times. She loves to go to the lake where there are tons of squirrels around for her to fantasize about catching. Also, my sister lives next door to the cottage and just got a new pup who has become Maggie's best friend. She gets very sad when she has to leave him!

I know others think THEY got the best dog, but we really DID get the best dog!

Thanks for saving her life..... It's hard to believe they couldn't find her a home down there. I would like to get her a play date with her friend "Winnie" who was saved with her. We should have just taken the both of them!
Thanks again..... Marti

Jess,    I just wanted to let you know that Tola is dong great. She has filled out a little more and her coat looks great. She is just under 79 lbs. We take her to different festivals and she always draws attention. Her new habit that I am trying to brake is lying on the hot tub cover. She loves the cool weather and if I let her she would stay out all day lying in the sun and shifting back to the shade. Can’t wait to se how she likes the cold. I ran into a guy that had one and he said his was a great dog. He also told me they can kill a wolf in less than a minute. I said not this one! I found out the Cincinnati Zoo is raising Anatolian Sheppard’s to help save the Cheetahs in Africa. They send them over as pups and they put them in with flocks of sheep and goats and they keep the Cheetahs away and the ranchers aren’t shooting them any more.

 Ron & Cindy,
I hope you had a great vacation. I bet your furbabies are glad to have you back. If you are like me, when I'm gone even for a couple of days, I miss my dogs.Speaking of dogs, I thought I would update you on Molly. I am now writing down this stuff as I've had to stop and think how soon Bridgette and Gretta domesticated.

Today is Molly's six-month anniversary with me. It has taken her six months as it did with Bridgette and Gretta to finally open up and completely trust me. I'm telling this to you so you can pass this and other information on for those adopting a feral dog. I now say "leash" and Molly runs to the bed and lets me put it on her. I now say "teeth" and Molly runs to the bed and lets me brush her teeth. She's playing ball and half the time brings it back to me. From my experience with feral dogs, they learn the basics such out "out," "walkie", etc. right away. It isn't until they have settled in and realize they have their forever home, that they really can be trained with other commands. One of my many dog books confirmed that you don't push a dog until he/she is secure and then they learn. I must agree with this as Molly is absolutely blooming. She and Gretta have a vet appointment on October 5 and I will be interested to see how much she weighs and how she reacts. She now climbs into my lap on her own for some petting. Every time she does, she is joined by Gretta.

I have never seen two dogs get along as well as these two do. Molly loves to play and devil Gretta and Gretta holds her own. Occasionally Gretta will instigate the playing which is amazing as she will be ten in December. Tomorrow is the ninth anniversary of  her adoption by me. Now that the weather is cooler they are getting two daily walks. The morning one is generally two plus miles. I always carry poop bags and water and a water bowl. Halfway through the walk, I say "are you thirsty?" and they stop while I pour them water and then share the bowl.

I hope one day soon to catch up with you at some dog function and bring Molly over for you to see. However, she might be shy there but trust me at home, she's no longer shy. She loves her backyard and sometimes will stay out for a bit without Gretta. She generally lays under a tree when that happens. She has never tried to dig her way out so I have removed a couple of blockades near the fence. I assume it's because Gretta has never tried to get out either. I know Gretta is teaching her many things and Molly always defers to Gretta.
They never fight about food. I am amazed that Molly is such a dainty eater. She doesn't inhale her food like Gretta does.

Did I mention what a good watch dog she is? No one will break in  here while she's around.  Just wanted you to know how attached I am to Molly. She comes over pettings whenever I am sewing or on the computer. Thanks again for fostering her and letting me adopt her.

Mirna,
Hi.  This is Teresa. We adopted Ranger from you 12 years ago. He was the almost all white border collie that you had temporarily named Laddie.

We had to let Ranger go on June 25. I am still crying. That frightened animal had become such a loving wonderful part of our family. We miss his little idiosyncrasies--herding the house always on the same path, always in the same direction etc. I have been off work since October and I know Ranger lasted longer and felt safer and more loved his last 9 months than all of his previous years combined. We were inseparable. But it was time. Best guess was that he was 15 when he died.

He adored the snow, that picture is from 4yrs ago. The other is about a month before he died. (and now I am crying again)

Hi Cacy!
I am attaching a few pictures of Clark for you! I will give a little info if you want to send it to whoever does the Happy Tails.
Clark is really enjoying his new family and friends. It is amazing how much he has opened up. In just a few weeks he has gone from shy to confident guy. He loves playing with the other dogs and is just a big big sweetheart. Clark is the opposite of a lot of dogs as he likes to sleep under the bed and not on top of it (saves me some dog fur on the sheets)! In one of the pictures you can see him laying under the computer desk, he likes to be in confined spaces where he can see all that is going on around him. He is definitely the best dog for me J Thank you so much CDC for allowing me the chance to bring in my new lifelong buddy!

August 2010, hanging with Luna while talking to foster Mom Mirna.
I feel that this is both a happy ending and a happy beginning. I should have stayed home from work yesterday. Luna has adopted Becky and
now just tolerates me. Just kidding. She has taken to Becky and that makes all three of us happy. I want Luna to be happy and if being
Becky’s girl satisfies her, it satisfies me.    Greg

Hi Mirna,
You probably do not remember us, but we adopted a dog from Columbus Dog Connection in July of 2000. His name was Saks, but his foster mom, Lindsey, renamed him Socks. Socks was a black lab mix and was with us for almost 10 years to the day. In his lifetime, he moved with us from Columbus, to Rutland, MA and then onto his final home in Cumming, GA. Socks loved everyone especially our two children who are 9 and 7. He always took everything in stride and was the joy of our family. I have attached a photo of him with our boys.

Yesterday, we had to say goodbye to him as he passed away. I wanted to let you know that without your organization, we never would have found that sweet, loveable guy. I am impressed when I check on the website to see how well Columbus Dog Connection is doing and helping lots of animals.
Thanks again for all that you do.         Sincerely,    Mike and Kristin Brozovic

Hey Terra,
I know it's been awhile since I've checked in with you on Izzy. I bet the kids are keeping you busy so I'll keep it short. Izzy is doing great. She's loving all the perks of me being in vet school (one year down, 3 to go). She has just a great, laid back personality. She loves to play with dogs and people. Her best friend is actually my roommates cat, Watson. They play together, sleep with each other, it's adorable. She travels with me to Pittsburgh and Kentucky and to parks around Columbus. She really is just the best dog. Thank you so much! I hope everything is well with you and your family.

Wanted to let you know that we've have a lovely first day with Louie (Henry).   He has been sweet and gentle and just great.  The boys are in love and so are we.  We took long walks yesterday and played in the backyard.  He enjoyed a nice nap in the living room too.  We also had a small block party last night & thought we might need to keep him inside so he would not get overwhelmed.  He wanted to be outside with us and everyone was amazed at what a good boy he is.  Not one bark or growl even with the kids getting to know him.  He even took a 30 minute nap right in the middle of the action.   He slept on our bed last night and went on a 2 mile run with my husband this morning.

thank you for all you did to help make Louie (Henry) the sweet, well-behaved boy that he is.  We could not be more happy!

Jessica,
Here are some photos from the dog park and the ice cream store afterwards! When I worked at Dairy Queen when I was a young teenager we always gave small cones to dogs for free. Everyone was cracking up at Sticky Fingers when she ate her cone! Enjoy the pictures! No more drool in the car, just when she eats or exercises!

April  2010  Hi Mirna,  Thought you would enjoy this pic of Carmine. He's lovely, isn't he?  (new haircut)

Hi Jessica
I adopted Prancer (now Zuni) and this is our story.

My beloved dog-Java, of 13 years, recently died of cancer. Being big animal lovers and strong proponents of animal rescue, we knew we would get another dog soon.  We felt that a younger dog might adapt better to moving in with cats, my parents (who live with us) and their dog. When we saw Prancer's picture and video, we fell in love with her.  Her foster parents, Danny and Rumi, had clearly given her a wonderful start with much love. After references were checked, including a home evaluation, it was final, and she was ours. There are no words to express our gratitude to have this wonderful dog in our life. She is perfect and such a joy in every way! She often sits in my lap with one of the cats or by cuddles up with me by herself. She loves my parents and their dog. She is very happy and is a part our family completely. I really appreciate the time and effort CDC took in checking references and making sure this would be a good home for Zuni and a good fit for us. Thank You!!!

Feel free to edit this for however you would like to use it, as well as the pictures.
And again-Thank you

May 2010
Jessica -
Again, I would like to thank you for all your efforts with CDC, and the wonderful work you all do. I adopted my Reggie 7 years ago from CDC, he had been rescued with a number of other dogs that were abused. He was thought to be around 3 at the time I adopted him but, his vet was thinking he was even older, perhaps closer to 5-6. When I first got him he was very skittish and would not let anyone even near him, except me. As he learned to see that not all humans were going to treat him badly he blossomed into a friendly, funny guy who learned to understand that it would take someone killing me first before anyone would ever hurt him again.

He suffered multiple illnesses, survived cancer surgery and thrived for a good deal of time. As he got older arthritis took it's toll on him but, he
never failed, no matter how hard it was to get up and down, to make sure that he was in any room of the house that I was in. He never failed to listen to me talk to him and wag his tail every time, lean in when he was close so that I would hug him, to share my cereal every morning, and to remain my loyal friend and companion. Sadly this past Friday after much agony over the decision, and his Vet's advise - the choice to end his life was made. His bladder had given out and his arthritis was so bad that he could barely at times lift his 100# frame. We laid together on the floor of the Vet's office and he peacefully died in my arms.

Even with the grief and loss I feel now - I would not trade one second I had with Reggie. I know a lot of people who have never been close to a pet do not understand all of this and how someone would be so attached to an animal but, love bonds are the greatest gifts we can have in life and the loyalty and companionship you have with a pet are like no other.

Thank you for allowing me to share our story with you, and thank you for being there to help me find one of the best and loyal friends of my life.
Sincerely,  Kris Zimmer

Hey Kellie,   Trevor and I finished our beginner's obedience class and we got 1st place! It was a total shock to me. Each week I would think, "I didn't do very well practicing with him" and each week he did very well. He's a pretty smart guy. Our (really his) 1st place ribbon came from our graduation test. We had to walk and turn and change speeds, then he had to sit and stay and come when called and sit for a short examination and a couple other things too. I'm so glad we took the class and look forward to taking more. In case you can't see the picture very well, it's of him wearing his 1st place ribbon and a bandana from Columbus All Breed Training.

Hope you are doing well.   Julie Roberts   Mutts on the Move Pet Care  April 2010

Hello! I  thought you all might like to know how Daffodil – now known as Erma – is doing.  Our little girl adopted us 6 months ago now – can’t believe how quickly time’s gone by! Lisa was right – Erma is the perfect little house dog, without a single bad habit. All she really seems to want out of life is love and food… and a good walk or two every day. Her tail wags almost non-stop, especially if someone looks her direction. We call her our little nut job – she’s so funny! She loves to cuddle, and will force her head (and the rest of her body, for that matter) under a hand or an arm to help jump-start the love fest. She “talks” almost constantly when she’s getting attention… so much so that we’ve considered changing her name again, to “Moan”-a. J It’s kind of funny though – as much as she loves attention, if she’s not actively receiving it, she wanders off to another room to hang out. It’s almost as if she’s saying she can’t bear to be in the same room with us if we’re not going to pet her. Erma seems to have virtually no concept of play – we haven’t found a single toy that she’ll play with, even after wandering the aisles at PetSmart. And if Max tries to start a play session, she tells him off in a big, bad way. He ends up getting offended and wandering off to play with a squeak ball by himself. I think she needs to spend some time around a puppy to figure it out! Oddly, though, she’s fascinated by anything flapping or dangling in trees. And she really, REALLY wanted to chase a couple of Canadian geese we saw on our walk yesterday. J
Hope everyone is doing well!
Take care!  Lisa & Eric Denison

4-8-10  Molly is doing well. It is so cute to see how Gretta mothers Molly. Even though she is nearly 9 1/2 she does spend about five to ten minutes each night playing with her. I was reading in bed when the two of them decided to "mouth" each other. Molly continually imitates Gretta. Most likely Molly needed more mothering and ironically Gretta, who was taken from her mother much too young, understands and mothers her. Gretta has several cuddle times a day with me and we have a 30 minute in bed cuddling time and Molly has been watching. Remember, Gretta originally didn't like to be petted or handled and now look! Oftentimes Molly comes into the fold to be included and Gretta is fine with it. I only have to grab her occasionally for chair cuddling. The indoor leash will come off next week. She does know her name but I want to make sure she'll come to me indoors first and then outdoors. She loves her backyard. I'll have to bring her to see you at one of the Mingle with the Mutts in the future. She does well with company now--no shaking. She is coming out of her shell. Everyone who sees her agrees that she's going to be a great dog.  Again, thanks for taking care of her.
Marcia

April 2010  Rumi & Danny,
Dandy is doing great! At first she was scared and was afraid to get out of the car. I led her out of the garage on the leash into the backyard and she
wandered a little but was still puzzled at everything. Within a short time she wanted pets and tummy rubs and enjoyed her dinner. Didn't put her in the
crate but I stood between their bowls as they ate and put a few more pieces of her food in her bowl until Taffy finished. They sniffed each other's
empty bowls and walked back to the living room. She wandered around the house and yard and got more familiar with everything and seemed a lot more comfortable. She and Taffy sniff each other and wag their tails. She is ready to play but Taffy hasn't ran like Dandy has. She likes getting on the couch and looking out the window.
She didn't want to sleep in the crate and liked sleeping in the large pet bed. This morning she touched the bedroom door to let me know she wanted out. The first night I put her bed next to my mine but she slept in the pet bed and seems to prefer it. Taffy sleeps in different places, sometimes on the floor, my bed or a pet bed. So far they are getting along and there have not been any problems, thank goodness. Haven't started training her to go thru the pet doors yet. She is so smart and affectionate and wants to be around us most of the time. Feel free to come and visit her. I'm sure she would be happy to see you.
Arlene

Linda
I know its been a while since you heard from Charline and myself but we felt that you would like an update on Major. Since we last spoke all kind of thing have happened here. Major has become a hero to Charline. While walking him she was attacked from behind by an unsupervised dog, I don't know if it was a vicious attack or not but Major got between her and the dog and held him off till I could chase him away. The only bad part to it is Charline lost her balance and fell breaking her hip and is presently at home moving around with a walker.
Beyond that Major has been an excellent addition to this household. He is very well behaved and does what he is told. He surely cured Charline and my broken heart from the loss of Looker. Although he will never replace Looker he has secured his own place in this family.
Hope all is well for you, keep in touch.
Always
Karl and Charline

Dear Momma Mirna,
Sorry so much times has passed since I wrote to you.  I am having a great time.  In December, I made my trip to the vet.  I am in great shape now
and current on all shots.  I really do not care to go in the car, but when we go to the vet, we stop and get ice cream in a cup, but then when Peanut
goes by herself, she brings me a cup of ice cream so I win either way.  I like the snow, but I spend everyday with Grandma.  I have my special chair that I sleep in at her house during the day.  At home in the apt, I sleep on the floor until Mom and Peanut get off the couch and go to the bed then I sleep on the couch.  Mom and Peanut take up too much room in the bed.  I am a big girl now and I want my own room.  I tell Mom to off the couch and go get into bed.  We still take a walk every am and pm, kinda dark at night, but we still go on a walk as soon as Mom gets home from work.  Then we play in the barn, fetch etc.  I have lots of toys.  I am healthy and happy.  Take care and come visit sometime.  I would love to share my experiences with you and show you how great my life is each and everyday.
Take Care, Miss Freckles

Hi, Mirna,
I don't know if you remember me, but in 1999, my husband Doug and I fostered a few dogs for CDC and adopted our very first foster -- a Newfoundland - Border Collie mix. CDC called him Buddy, but we named him Tiger (after my Auburn University Tigers. Down there when a boy is very bouncy and full of himself, you say 'Now there's a real Tiger.' It fit this dog to a tee.) We moved to Dayton in 2000. I always meant to update you and let you know what an incredibly wonderful dog Tiger was. Sadly, he died of cancer in October 2008. He brought us ten years of love and joy and we'll always be grateful to CDC for introducing us. Attached is a shot of Tiger and his little brother (another rescue) in case you're interested in seeing how one of your foster babies turned out.
Peggy

Judy,  Here are some pics of Lily for you! She's been doing great and is beginning to bond with the other two dogs. We are all looking forward to things progressing with our little doggy family.
Happy New Year!
Sandy

Thanks to your organization, we adopted Clyde 2.5 years ago. He came from an owner who had to be court ordered to surrender lots of cats and dogs. Clyde was to be put down due to his condition, which was primarily due to untreated allergies. Luckily, someone called you guys and you took him and nursed him back to health. He has had a happy 2 1/2 years now. Just recently he started having seizures, and in the course of his testing at the vet, the vet discovered 5 BB's and 1 pellet embedded in various parts of his body, along with a crooked pelvis from previous injury. How sad!! But thanks to your organization he has been able to know the pleasures of being a dog. Just imagine how sad his life would have been if it had ended before he got that chance. Clyde thanks you and so do we!!!
We love him very much.   Mark & Marcy Niendam

Dec 2009
Hi Kellie -
I just wanted to let you know that Malcolm has settled in so nicely and is fully a part of the family. I'm not sure if I told you or not, but he is back in his crate when I am gone. I bought him a super size wire crate (like the kind he was used to at your house) and put a bed in it. So it is super deluxe and comfy. There were a few "incidents" while I was gone which lead me to conclude that he just wasn't ready for all that freedom yet. Anyway, he is doing quite well and is happy with his best friend Ivy and his new home. They play and rough house a lot. We still walk every day, and I have learned to wrestle his big body into the tub for baths. If you ever want to come see him, I know he'd be so happy to see you. He's settled down immensely with greeting me (no jumping) but with others it's still a challenge. So, I leash him at first when people come over until he calms down. He did well at Lisa's this weekend (she watched Ivy and Malcolm over Thanksgiving weekend) once he was able to settle in.
Thank you so much for sharing such a wonderful hound with me - I love him so much!
Wendy

Hello Jennifer,  Here are a couple of pictures of Sierra in her new home. She is a terrific dog, and has given me no trouble at all.

Sierra is a very smart dog - I usually only need to tell her something once. She is constantly watching both me and Boots for cues. She has ignored the pet birds in the house, but is very fond of chasing squirrels in the yard - which is fine with me because they camp out at the wild bird feeders. She has had no accidents in the house and has not gotten into anything.

Sierra is just a joy and has brightened up our home. Boots has stopped the anxious behavior he has displayed since Katie died, and although he is tired out from all the walking, he seems much more relaxed. I am grateful to you and your organization for helping Boots and me to add such a delightful new member to our family.
Thank you for all your hard work with her, and have a Happy Thanksgiving,   Cynthia

Hey Jessica,
Things have been going really well. Luna and Lucky are getting along great. They wrestle around and play together all the time. Occasionally they bicker over a particular bone, but then the other finds something else to play with. All in all they have become fast friends. He's eating well. He has developed a habit of carrying around a stuffed toy and walking in circles before going outside for his morning bathroom visit, which is really strange but cute. His favorite spots in the house are under the coffee table or on our bed. He likes to snuggle and kiss a lot and is good at getting our attention away from other things to give him hugs and belly rubs. He's had a couple of accidents here and there in the house, which is expected. But he still has never had an accident in his crate. He has sit down to a "T" now, and will come when called when Dan and I call him. We are still working on lay down, but he is pretty close to having "stay" down pat. So far, Lucky seems to be the perfect addition to our household, and I think Luna really enjoys having his company.

In December, 2008, the Flecksteiner family got one of the best Christmas gifts ever. It came to our house in the form of an 18 pound Miniature Pinscher/Beagle mix! Her given name (by us) is Sasha Margaret. Traditionally, our family travels to Chicago each year for the Christmas holiday. Last year, for unforeseen reasons, we were not able to make the trip home. My mom always says that “everything happens for a reason”. Well, this time the reason turned out to be Sasha! She is the best Christmas gift ever.
Although last year we were sad that we were not able to travel to Chicago for Christmas, we realize that the reason we didn’t go (in the bigger picture) is because Sasha becoming a part of our family was just meant to be. She has a family that loves her very much, she has a big brother Alex (our Lab/Doberman mix that we adopted from a shelter years ago) who immediately took her under his wing and protects her as much as he protects me, and she has a comfy home with lots of her favorite things – toys, treats, blankies). The bigger gift at Christmas was ours though – in getting Sasha and having her special sparkle and love in our lives.

Hi Mirna,
You’ve been on my mind a lot. How are things going? Our little kittes, Savannah and Max are doing wonderfully. They have developed quite the personalities and are slowly finding their “spots” in our animal kingdom and people routines. Kevin and I love them to pieces.  I wanted to share a picture of Savannah. She has become especially close to our 1 year-old cat, Marco. They often are found snuggling and/or grooming each other.  We caught this picture not too long ago on the cat tree and thought you might enjoy seeing one of the kittens you rescued.       Jenny & Kevin    Feb 2009

March 2009  Hi Lisa - At last . . . a photo of Ivy and I and Harley too. Ivy is still doing well . . .
she took a treat today from my friend who was visiting. She also came out yesterday to get a good look (from a few feet
away) at my Mom when she stopped by. She is getting better going upstairs, and is at my feet now under my desk. I love her.
Take Care, Wendy

Ron and Cindy,
The boys are fantastic. I can't believe they turned 3 this year! We live in a wonderful spot in Boston. near the ocean and close to a lot of state parks. Levi weighs in at 93 now, can you believe it? Akii is 45lbs and is still living the life of a lapdog. we're out all the time with them and love them to death.

Hi Terra,
I thought you might to see some pictures of me. I am doing great and adjusting to my new home and the neighborhood.
I'm quite the little barker but I don't bark at the people I know...It just takes me a little time to get to know them.
I get to play with lots of toys and there are plenty of chew bones. When I'm tired I hop up on the back of the sofa to curl up in a big red throw just for me. Sometimes PJ has to put me in my place once in a while but that's what brothers are suppose to do.

I want to thank you for taking care of me and helping me find this new home. It takes special people like you to help
the furry canine critters. I hope you and your family have a great summer!

Paws and Kisses,
CeCe (Jax)  & Larry, Jeanie, & PJ

Tramp, now known as Tucker, May 2009
Mary Ann:  I just wanted to take a moment to tell you Thank you for being such a great Foster mom to our new puppy. I'm sure it's not easy saying goodbye, but we'll be sure to keep you updated on how he's doing. All the little extra information you gave us about Tramp and his personality was helpful. He's brought such joy into our lives. We have decided to go with the name Tucker and hope that he likes his new name. I'm enclosing some photos of his first night at our house. He seems to be adjusting well and is such a sweet dog. We took him for a long walk last night, and he slept through the night. He really does cuddle like a baby, and we've gotten a lot of enjoyment out of being able to hold him. The only issue we've had, is that he hasn't seemed to want to eat, but I'm sure he'll be fine once he settles in. It's the food that you sent for him, and he's sniffed at it a few times, but so far, hasn't eaten. He had fun playing outside last night, he does seem to love the grass. Again, thanks for all that you do for the dogs out there who need a loving home. We feel blessed to have one of the most special puppies, and it's obvious he was well loved by you!   Sally and Meghan

February 2009
Debbie,  They are doing great!  They play almost constantly, eat together, go outside together, and sleep together.  Daisy is very sweet and likes to cuddle,
which is nice because Bubble isn't much of a cuddler.  I don't think either dog has had a single accident--Daisy seems to be having a
positive influence on Bubble.  Daisy is starting to learn "sit" (with the help of lots of treats).   The cats are primarily still hiding out, but are
becoming more brave.  Daisy is very interested in them and does well but barks when really worked up.  We are keeping the DAP and
Feliway plugged in to keep everyone as stress-free as possible.

My sister loved her!  We will probably stop over to show my parents this weekend.  Thank you so much for rescuing Daisy because she is just perfect for Bubble and they are best buddies.   Thank you for letting us have her because I know it was hard to give her up.  I think you are going to be great at fostering!Call or e-mail anytime for updates and of course you can stop by for a visit any time.

Hi Ron and Cindy!

Just wanted to check in since it has been a while! Bruno is doing just great!  Although he still has quite a bit of puppy left in him, he is really starting to calm down and most days is happy enough just chewing toys on his bed or curling up on my lab while I watch tv.

There is a huge empty lot not too far from our house, and most mornings Mike walks the boys over there early so they can run around and work out some energy before we have to leave for work.  In the afternoons we play a lot of catch in our backyard or go on a nice walk through the neighborhood.  Schroeder is really slowing down lately and we are so happy he has Bruno to keep him playing and entertained.

I have attached a few pictures from the past year (Schroeder had an eye surgery and that is why is is wearing a cone).  You will see that Bruno and Schroeder have grown really close and we often find them cuddling on the couch or on their giant floor bed.  On trips they have the entire backseat to divide between the two of them, but they almost always are right next to one another... who thought after their first encounter almost 2 years ago they would be so close today?!

We think of Maksim often and wish very much that we had the space and resources to be able to bring him into our home!

Take care!       Brittany, Mike, Bruno and
Schroeder

Dear Mirna-
Thought you'd like to see how the kids are doing.   They were taken in a park in Albuquerque.  As you can see the dogs fit in so well.  Casey is slowing down these days and has had some minor seizures that left me very concerned.  The vet seems to think that she has a very slow growing tumor in her head that is causing the seizures.  She is slowing down and our walks are shorter, but no less anticipated and enjoyed.  I hate that she is suddenly mortal and am cherishing every day even more now.  Jackson is the happiest little critter even without his teeth.  Barking and being bossy, he is such a show off these days.  The girls next door dote on both of them and Master Jack has become much more outgoing and accepting of humans.  Nice to see.  The other pitiful face there is Buster, our newest adoptee.  Brought him home on March 1st from the Rio Rancho Animal Control.  Someone had found him wandering around and brought him in.  He is a happy boy -- give him a tennis ball and a walk and he's set for life!  All three get along famously!

Thanks for keeping me in the loop with the Columbus Dog Connection.  Got your package today and was surprised to learn that Ohio is 2nd worst puppy mill state.  I can at least harangue the governor with a letter telling him about Jackson.  While he gets better every day but you can still tell the scars of being in that puppy mill are there.  He still ducks when you go to pet him.  Cannot put a collar around his neck and he hates being picked up.  For all his triumphs, those scars won't go away.
Keep up the good work!  I think of you lots.  Take care and thanks for all you do!    Sue Emmer

 March 2008    Oh Mirna,
Thank you so very much for thinking of me and sending me the email about Queenie. She is the dearest little soul. Every night Queenie,  Martha, and Hannah have slept cozy in bed with me. Hannah licks Queenie's face and Queenie's tail just wags all the time. As soon as she awakens, her tail wags! She just fit right in with the family.  Queenie was quite excited the first time she saw deer in the backyard. I heard her bark for the first time. She has chosen her favorite spot to nap. Her preference is the ottoman in the living  room. Queenie is braving the snow and follows in Martha and Hannah's tracks. Please forward this to her foster Mom. Thank you, Joyce. We love Queenie. I can just imagine how you miss her. She is fine and her tail indicates that she is happy with her new friends. Thank you so very much.     Thank you both so much!! Marianne

Hi Mirna
I wanted to give you an update on our girls!!! Molly (Alexis/Lexy) is the lighter one on the left (as you look at the picture) and Izzy (Audrey or Aubrey?) is on the right and darker. Both are weighing in around 53 pounds. They love being outside in the yard and playing ball with us...ok mostly Izzy since Molly thinks the ball is her personal chewie. Izzy is very much the pleaser & kisser and Molly is our snuggler(but only on her terms). Both girls think they are little lap dogs and still sit on our laps.
Also I wanted to thank you for helping us to have such wonderful family. Ron & I are so happy we decided to adopt two sisters instead of one at a time. It has been so fulfilling being a dog mommy & daddy! I noticed that some of their siblings are still up for adoption (Ava, Adeline, etc.). I hope they find their forever homes soon. I have even made suggestions to a few co-workers.  If there is ever a family "reunion", Ron & I would love to participate.
Thank you!!
Sara
ps I am so thankful you brought our girls up from Mike's Dog Cabin.

Hi Mirna, Presley is doing great. ( 17 lbs already ). He has found his home. He did get his tag and cert. Here are a couple of pictures of the little terror. Guess we will all miss Penelope and please give them our number if they are interested.
One of the things that we will always cherish is the love and help that you give to the pets. Thank you again for all that you did for us. Take care and I hope your heart mends soon!!

Hoover & Hannah were 10 months old when they were surrendered by a puppy miller going out of business in Holmes County Ohio.  There were carried, by the scruff of their necks, at arms length, by an Amish person because they were dirty and urinating and defecating because they were so frightened.  This is their happy ending.  Although adopted at different times, these siblings will live
happily ever after now.
Well, we finally decided we couldn't resist and had to get his sister for him. In the short few days she has been here, they have had a blast!
They run, play, sleep and eat their treats together. They have become purely inseparable. They went on a walk together today and it was truly adorable. Thankfully, they seem to have their good traits rubbing off on each. They tire each out a lot with all their playing and they race so fast around the backyard. Needless to say, we are extremely glad we decided to get her too. We named the sister Hannah and she seems to be
coming out of her shell more and more by the minute. Hope you all have a great holiday and thank you for all the wonderful work you do for these little guys.               Tommy, Christine, Hoover & Hannah

I adopted Annie (Cayenne) from you in February.
Annie is doing amazing. There are at least 5 people that have told me they want an exact clone of her. Every time I bring her to a dog park everyone starts talking about her, commenting, and ask me questions. She's never had an accident, chewed anything (except her bones), or barked in the house.  She is so kind with my one and two year old nephews.  They sit on her, step on her, pull her ears, and all she does is lick their faces.  She is so good at the barn with the horses.  I have her off leash and she comes right when I call.  She is somewhat interested in the horses, but is definitely not afraid.  That's the best combination for a dog to be when with horses.  She is a couch potato when I want to be, and she is always ready to go anywhere.  I have brought her to the Polaris mall multiple time, she loves swimming at Antrim park, she has hiked all the steep steps in hocking hills, and she has even been to an air show.
I just want to take you for giving Annie a chance to meet me.  She is so well balanced and level headed, and I know it was because she was fostered with a family.  I want to thank you for what you did for her, because I am soo lucky to have her.

This little guy was hit by a car and his leg severely injured. His owner did not seek veterinary care for this suffering pooch.  A concerned neighbor
contacted the humane society and they removed him from that home.  The humane society contacted CDC to take him.  CDC was able to have Barkey operated on the day after receiving him and placed into a foster home.  Barkey's foster family says that he is an affectionate and well-behaved little guy. He will make a great addition to a home that is ready to reciprocate with love and attention.  Barkey's veterinary costs will be close to $1,200.
Thank you to the Rowe Family for their generous donation to help offset Barkey's medical costs.
Their donation will give Barkey the opportunity to be a happy and healthy  dog

Happy Endings for 2 puppy mill dogs.

Elsie & Jane                   Estee                             Sue, & Jane with the kids                     Mattie                                  Estee & Mattie

I live in a unique family home. My Mother, Stepfather and I own a twin-single. They live on one side and I on the other. We have a beautiful fenced in backyard.  All of us had a dog in our younger years. We began to think it was time to look around fro the right pooch for us.  We thought we could be a great home for a rescue dog. We read about an adoption fair sponsored by Columbus Dog Connection. We decided to drive by, just for a look to see how things worked.  I scanned the pooches and my eyes immediately fell on HER.  She was a sweet, small silver schnauzer. I was smitten right then and there! I began talking with her foster Mom, Kellie DiFrischia who turns out to be Co-Director of CDC.

Kellie gushed talking about what a wonderful dog Elsie was.  Turns out Elsie would go out on Kellie's boat (we had a pontoon boat). She loved to ride in the car (my stepdad was hoping for a buddy when he would go on errands). I went onto explain that two out of three of use were already retired and had plenty of time to give Elsie a wonderful life. I spent the next few hours at that adoption fair. I couldn't/wouldn't leave Elsie. I was jealous of anyone else that approached her or asked about her.  Kellie took time to talk with all who expressed interest. I watched as they would walk away and get in their cars. I would stroll by Kellie and remind her that my folks and I saw her first. ;)

What a joy! Adoption day was September 14! It took a few days for Elsie to understand that she had a new family. She settled in enjoying boat rides, car rides, fenced in backyard with both side of the twin single having pet doors. Elsie would always have someone's undivided attention.

Elsie later on became ill. She suffered from Cushings Disease among some other health concerns. We gave her the care that she needed to be as healthy as possible. Eventually her health began to fail. My folks and I discussed the need to be aware of Elsie's quality of life. We called Kellie to let her know that Elsie was becoming increasingly sicker and the need for her to be humanely euthanized was nearing. Kellie came to see her after that. They played and exchanged affection one last time. Elsie seemed to leave her illness behind her that day. She was excited to see Kellie again.

A few short days later Elsie showed signs of her system shutting itself down. My folks and I carried her to the vet, said our goodbyes and held her as the doctor injected her with a shot to stop her sweet heart. We all sobbed. I have never seen my stepfather cry like he did that day. Our time with Elsie was short, but the quality of that time was phenomenal. Truly a Happy Ending!

Time passed and I told myself that I couldn't go through losing another ever again. Kellie called my step dad after they had been involved in a raid at a puppy mill at Doris Knight's farm in Morrow County. There was a another schnauzer that was in desperate need of placement. Would we be interested? I wasn't ready but my step dad was. The stories were horrific about the conditions that these dogs came from. This dog had a long list of health and behavioral issues. She was one of the last of over 100 dogs to be placed in a home. Coincidentally I adopted Elsie on September 14. The raid happened a couple years later on September 14. Meant to be? Could be.

It became immediately obvious that this dog had been abused among other things at the puppy mill. She showed fear and aggression towards my step dad. Then, as with Elsie, we locked eyes. She came to ME. I know, I SAID I wasn't ready for another dog just yet. Well, this poor girl needed a great deal of patience and attention. I could provide both. I thought again of the coincidence of September 14 being the day I had adopted Elsie and that this was the same date of the puppy mill raid. While we were there visiting her the vet's office received a call from Mirna Bowman (CDC Co-Director). We talked briefly on the phone. I told her I couldn't turn this dog away. It wouldn't be a good situation for her to go to a male owner given her behaviors around men. Arrangements were made to take her to my home once she was medically cleared.

When she was rescued and arrived at the New Albany's vet clinic a tech named her Koala. That didn't seem to fit quite right. I was awake all night thinking of what would be the right name for her. We were told when she was rescued that her hair was matted so badly that they initially did not know what kind of dog she was. That was it! Mattie! Mattie had a great deal of trust issues to work through. My poor step dad went through heal nipping, lunging and excessive barking.  She went through separation anxiety from having so many puppies taken from her over time. She would gather my teddy bear collection and move them from room to room with her and make sure that they were in her bed at night. So Precious!

Our walks in the neighborhood was a huge benefit for more than just Mattie. Senior citizens that lived alone would come to their doors and windows when we walked by. In good weather these people would venture outdoors and call to us for a visit. Mattie seemed to sense these people were not a threat but needed her time. Mattie was making progress every week, but she still had numerous issues that needed worked through. My step dad thought that possibly getting another dog may help Mattie learn how to be a regular ol' dog. It turns out that there was another dog that was rescued from the same puppy mill and needed someone to take her. This particular dog was very needy and unsettled. A home with constant attention was needed to help in the transisition.

My folks went to visit this dog while I stayed with Mattie. They came home with a little white Bichon of sorts named  Estee. This dog was barking constantly, hiding under furniture and not coming to anyone when called. My folks and I all have worked in various areas of "Special Education", etc. It did not take long for us to come to the conclusion that this dog cannot hear anything at all. A trip to the vet confirmed that. Untreated ear infections led to her deafness. Once we knew that we were able to train her more appropriately.

The girls have been wonderful for each other. It took awhile for things to settle and for the girls to learn the routine of both households. I have been battling some health problems and these girls have given me reason to live and get up in the morning! It has been a perfect fit for ALL of us.  I cannot imagine my life any other way. I am so glad I pursued adoption of another dog after losing Elsie. I think our Guardian Angel knew it would be best for us to open our homes again.

I am hoping for these girls to be a part of our family for many years to come. However long they are with us it will be a quality of life fro us ALL that one must experience to understand and appreciate. Happy Endings? Happy Beginnings. Happy lives for us ALL.

To Lisa from Tootsie:   Dear Lisa,
I was wondering if you could look at the attached picture and see if there are grounds for an animal cruelty case here.  As a feared and respected Shep-Rott mix, how much of the pictured treatment should I be expected to endure?  Sure, my pet humans feed me well, let me sleep everywhere except the beds and give me lots of chew toys, but I've recently been told that "She Who Dresses Me" posted this on their "web site,"
whatever that is.
The point is, I'm very concerned that other dogs and humans may see it, and my reputation could be forever harmed. I'm also a little worried about other irreverent human behavior.  Today "He Who Vacuums Me" let me smell a "Men's Health" magazine, which was great especially when he opened a smelly part and let me rub my head and shoulders against it.  But for some reason he couldn't stop laughing when I did, calling me "Tara Reid at a frat party," whatever that means, but I'm sure it wasn't good.
Simply put, I have a reputation to keep - could you call someone and make "Brush Boy" & "Costume Girl" cease and desist?  Well, unless it cuts in on the food, treats, pampering, play and games - in which case we
can just let the issue drop.
  Thanks, and with Love,  Tootsie

Hi Beth,

I just wanted to send you a little note to let you know that Jill is doing great. She must know that this is her home now because she is fitting in with no problems. She has such a personality that we just love and we are so glad that we chose to bring her home.

Beth, thank you for all you do. A lot of dogs would be lost without people like you, Mary Ann, and Mirna. Keep doing what you're doing because you are making such a difference in so many lives. Take care.

Pat

"We continue to be so grateful to Columbus Dog Connection for making it possible to have these two wonderful companions in our lives.  I am sure that you are aware of how much good you do for dogs.  Maybe you aren't aware though, of how much good you do for people"
Adoptive Family of 2 Columbus Dog Connection Dogs

Hey Kellie,
I wanted to share a story with you about Jasmine and Fraggle.  Fraggle was rescued from a collector situation and he is a small white poodle.  When he first arrived at our house you couldn't tell what he was, he smelled bad, his coat was so matted it clearly hurt when we tried to pick him up.  He ended up being shaved and having most of his teeth pulled.  He was frail and thin.  We were never sure what kind of future he had.

My daughter, has had a rough road and was severely neglected and abused in her foster home before becoming my daughter.  She was distant and had a great deal of trouble being close to people.  You wouldn't know this on the surface because she seemed so friendly and out going.  In all the years I've been fostering none of the dogs would go to her, they'd let her pet them and feed them but none would stay in her room or sleep with her.  They seemed to know there was something below the surface with her that troubled them.  All the while progress was being made through hard work, therapy and numerous other efforts to help her heal from her ordeal.

As scared and frail as Fraggle was he would only let one person in the house hold him, feed him or do anything with him, Jass.  She was the only one who could get him to come to her, he slept with her, it seemed nothing short of a miracle to everyone in the house.  A great deal of healing took place between these two special beings, both recovering from trauma we couldn't understand.  Today they are absolutely inseparable, she moves, he moves it is an amazing love story and shows the power of healing between one small dog and one small girl.

Hi Mirna! Just wanted to wish you a great holiday and report that Callie turned a very happy 1 year old last month! She and Moxie get along well and she plays like a normal puppy. She has made tremendous progress and is very affectionate once she gets to know someone. The kennel that I take her to has 24 hours accessibility and we have been working with her socialization and fear issues. She still has some fear with new people, particularly men or those odd few who don't like dogs (how is this possible!?), but has really turned out to be a great dog! I couldn't love her any more than I do! Here is a pic of her, could you pass it on to Susan for me? I stopped into Moochie to see her a couple of times but she was off on those days.. I know that she would enjoy seeing Callie as she was her foster mom.  Thanks again for allowing me to have Callie in my life! Enjoy your holiday! Micha

Hi Dog Connection Folks,

Here I am with Santa, giving him a kiss and trying to pose for the picture.  I am happy with my new family, the Ballantynes.
They are taking great care of me, and I take care of them by getting them off the couch and outside for walks, even on cold days.
They say I'm the perfect dog, and it's true.  They are so happy they found me.  Thanks to all of you for a wonderful service for dogs like
me and humans like the Ballantynes.  Merry Christmas, kiss Santa for me.

We are so happy to have that little dog in our lives. She is feisty, curious, fun-loving, giving, and very smart. Never a dull moment! We are going to look into agility training for her - I think it would be a great outlet for all of her energy, and she LOVES to run and loves being around other dogs. Now if WE can only keep up with her! Currently, her favorite backyard activity is waiting for squirrels - she's obsessed! She'll sit for hours, just waiting. When one appears, she runs and pounces, but so far the squirrels have won every encounter. I hate to tell her, but I think the squirrels will always be the victor. She's fast, but they are just that much faster. Such a hoot!

We'll keep you posted - by the way, a friend of mine from work just adopted two dogs at a recent Mingle! I don't think they were Col. Connection dogs, but it doesn't matter. Because of the Mingle, and because of all of the people like you who give so much of their time and energy, two more pooches found a home!
Take care - GO BUCKS! Jane

Hi Mom. Tara here. Things are going good. The first evening I was scared and cried a lot. But Wendy rubbed my belly and talked to me a lot to help me feel better. But even though I was scared I really liked a lot of things they had on the tables over here. As you can see in one of the pictures. The belly rub felt good but the smell on the table was even better. HEHE I stole a pretzel stick right out of Wendy's mouth. She was taking to long to eat it and it looked sooo yummy. She did not get to upset with me but now when they eat Rusty and I have to stay in the dog pin. I don't like the dog pin. I rather be where everyone else is at. When it was time for bed Wendy had to pick me up cause the bed is to tall. I think I heard her talking about making me some stairs so I can get into bed myself. She did not know how to pick me up and I yelped but she said she was sorry and gave me hugs and kisses. I missed you a lot my first night here. I was up and down all night. Wendy was tired the next day cause she stayed up with me and told me everything would be OK. In the morning Wendy had to take her daughter to dance class. She put Rusty and I in the dog pin again. I cried and yelped and made a fuss for the first 20mins. or so but when no one came to let me out I stopped. I had a poop accident while she was gone. When she got home she told me oh Tara, bad Tara and then put me outside right away. She did not lay a hand on me. Then she left again. She went to see her dad for a little while. He is sick with cancer so Rusty and I could not go. I did not poop that time. I was so happy when she got home. She had a little trouble getting me outside cause all I wanted was my belly rubbed. She laughed and rubbed my belly for me. We went for a walk and met a friend. A little black and white dog. He was nice to us. After our walk I went for a ride on a four wheeler. We sent you a picture of that too. She went real slow so I wouldn't fall. We went into the woods and ended in a field where someone has a campfire ring. It was so fun. There were all kinds of smells out there. This evening I have been doing better. I am not fussing unless I want a belly rub. Everyone gives me belly rubs. Tonight Wendy said she might put me in the dog pin for bed. I don't like that idea but we will see how it goes. She has blankets and pillows in the dog pin for us to lay on. I think Wendy is getting the hang of picking me up cause I've only yelped a few times. We hope to hear from you and my letters wont always be so long. Wendy knows how hard it is to give up a little furry friend so she wanted me to let you know how things were going. Bye for now. More pictures will come in the future.
TARA and Wendy

Tara came from Franklin County Animal Shelter.  Lisa had contacted Mirna telling her that she had a beagle, scared to death, hiding in the back of the cage and wanted to know if we were able to take her. When I got Tara, she was very anxious to be loved.  She had a cherry eye that needed to be taken care of.  She was a little underweight, but it didn't take any time for her to gain some weight and look healthy again.  The cherry eye was removed.

I figured out right away that Tara was going to need a special home.  Someone that would have time to spend with her that she needed.  She hates to be left alone.  Within the first week of me fostering her I found out that she loves belly rubs.  We started to get into the routine every evening of her laying in my lap and me giving her a belly rub, sometimes until she fell asleep.

From what I have heard from Tara's new mom Wendy,  the entire family loves to come home because Tara really gives them an excited welcome home.  Wendy did tell Tara now she has 2 moms.

Shasta the day she came to CDC                        Shasta after 1 week                     Shasta after

Shasta came to us from Pike county, where we have become accustomed to pups with mange and all sorts of problems.  She was pitiful looking with mange, eye infections and ear infections.  Her soon to be foster mother fought back tears hearing her whimper and just looking at her on the way to the vet.  To look at her was to wonder just what kind of dog she would be when she grew some hair.
After only a week at Gahanna Animal Hospital, Shasta was well on her way to recovery.  In no time she started growing her coat and what a beautiful black, shiny, and wavy coat it was.

Demi’s Success Story!

Humane Officers at the Capital Area Humane Society rescued Demi on October 15, 2003.   She had been tied out to a plastic doghouse for 4 years, neglected, barely fed and almost starved to death.  She was so weak; she could not get up and therefore, developed pressure sores on her back legs.  Neighbors did not call the Humane Officers out there, a construction worker did.  He was in the neighborhood working on a deck and was appalled at what he saw.  The owner was ultimately sentenced to a $1500 fine, 1 night in jail and is not to own a pet for 5 years.

The neighborhood was a nice one in the Grove City area.  The wife was pregnant.  Their excuse was that they had no time to care for their dog.   Demi spent 5 months rehabilitating herself at the Capital Area Humane Society.  Once her health issues resolved, she was deemed unadoptable due to her skittish temperament. Dogs Deserve Better focuses on rescuing chained dogs.  Demi is the poster child for the dogs we try to help.   Melody and Tony Newlun are foster parents for Dogs Deserve Better.  They offered to foster little 4 year Demi.  She is the cutest of terrier mixes.  They also have a Rottie, named Samson, and another rescue from a chain, a German Shepherd named Herk.   Thanks to CAHS for saving her, Dogs Deserve Better for rescuing, fostering and adopting her and Columbus Dog Connection for placing her on their adoptable dogs page. Happy endings for Demi!

Dear Columbus Dog Connection,

I just want to let you know what a positive impact Columbus Dog Connection has had on my life.  Nine months ago I met my best (canine) friend Cody through a Columbus Dog Connection day at the Petco, on Olentangy Road.  Cody was ten pounds underweight, but the Crooks, one of your foster families were doing their best to nurse him back to health.  Apparently your organization had rescued him from a kennel rescue site where he had been for a year. When I brought him home he was very quite and reserved for the first month.  I am indebted to the Crooks for their advice and help to choose the right dog for my personality (and his) that was well worth the $125 fee.

Cody is now a healthy 65 pounds and full of energy and love.  Lots of energy!  We go on twice daily walks to Iuka Park and run together.  He is friendly with people in particular and playful to the point of being rowdy.  When my friends talk about adopting a pet I encourage them to look at your web site. If you could pass this along to the Crooks I would appreciate it.  They might be interested to know that Cody has found a good home.

Appreciatively,
Mariah

Puppy Mill dog lives last few years as a beloved pooch.
Britney was rescued by Columbus Dog Connection from the Morrow County Puppy Mill.  Britney lived her life in a cramped trailer among the company of over 100 other dogs.  Her gentle temperament was amazing considering she likely had little socialization.  Britney was with CDC for over a year until adopted by the Schmidt family.  They, along with foster parents Jaime and Tony Crooks gave this wonderful pooch the best few years of her life.   Britney passed away of heart failure in the summer of 2004.

Frankie after being removed from shelter         Frankie riding in the family boat

Frankie has a big "brag" to share with the newsletter. He's come so far in the last year...from shaking to finishing agility courses and even training a standard poodle all by himself! ;-) Here's a little bit from his story:

Franklynn Roosevelt  was adopted as an extremely shy, scared, and naked one year old poodle. The first weeks of being in his new home consisted of him shaking in the corner of the kitchen or shaking in his new mom's lap.  4-H Judges have come to know the little Frankie as the one who would either dart out of the ring if taken off leash, or the one who would sit in the entry to the ring shaking and looking back at mom. But five years and a handler change later, Frankie has finished not one, but TWO agility courses (off leash!). He even was wagging his tail through one of them!! The oh-so-scared Frankie has also passed his AKC Canine Good Citizen test and has successfully "trained" two younger brothers: a five year old Standard Poodle, Jett, and a six month old miniature poodle, Leland.

A Home for Frankie

Story by Erin Medick  reporter for The Columbus Dispatch

The matts were so large they dangled from the eyes and mouth of the apricot-colored poodle, obscuring his vision and making it difficult for him to eat and drink.

The memory of the little dog shuddering in the back of a cage haunted the social worker. The man saw the dog at the Fairfield County Humane Society shelter while looking for the pets of a family he had been working with. The family had left the area and the man thought they may have left their pets behind He was relieved to find his hunch was right and made arrangements to have the pets taken from the shelter and placed in a home. But it was the little apricot-colored poodle that continued to pull at his heartstrings after he left the shelter. He called Kellie DiFrischia, co-founder of Columbus Dog Connection, a local dog rescue organization, and told her about the dog.

The organization rescued the dog and it was placed with DiFrischia while it waited to be adopted.  Photos of the dog taken shortly after he was rescued from the shelter said it all. "It was one of the saddest, most horrifying things I had ever seen," DiFrischia said of the dog's appearance. The dog, who DiFrischia named Frankie, was taken to a veterinarian where his coat was shaved to remove the matts and he was given routine vaccinations.

"He was a broken little spirit waiting for something harsh to happen to him," DiFrischia said of the then two-year-old dog. "He had been extremely abused and neglected."

Columbus Dog Connection was formed in 1998 by DiFrischia and Mirna Bowman. The all-volunteer group takes in stray dogs, as well as those found in humane societies, abuse and neglect situations and when a dog's owner dies. The dogs are temporarily placed in foster homes until they are adopted. Since the organization was founded, more than 500 dogs have found homes.

All who have met Frankie, including his new owners, Jonie and Rex Birkinbine, of Gahanna, believe his rescue was meant to be. DiFrischia said Frankie symbolizes what her organization is trying to do. "He's truly a rags to riches story," she said. "He went from a horrible situation into a very warm and loving home."

Last February, Mrs. Birkinbine was passing some time at Easton while waiting to pick up her daughter and she heard dogs barking. It was adoption day at Petsmart. "I stopped to see them and fell in love with several," Mrs. Birkinbine said. One of the dogs she fell in love with happened to be DiFrischia's poodle which was not up for adoption. But when DiFrischia heard Mrs. Birkinbine was interested in a poodle she told her another adoption fair would be held the following day at the Petsmart on Sawmill Road and there would be poodles there.

When DiFrischia arrived at Petsmart the next day to prepare for the fair she brought Frankie. The Birkinbine's and their two children, Jill, 13, and Erik, 9, were already there. "As soon as I saw him I fell in love with him," Mrs. Birkinbine said. "All of us did. He was so scared. As soon as I held him he calmed down. He needed a good home and he knew we could give him that."

DiFrischia said Columbus Dog Connection requires prospective owners to fill out a detailed application and background checks are made with an applicant's veterinarian.  The group then has applicants visit the foster home to see if they and the dog are a good match, DiFrischia said. Group members then visit the applicant's home with the dog to make sure it would feel comfortable there and fit in well with the family, she said.

The Birkinbines passed everything with flying colors and on March 1 the family went to DiFrischia's Worthington home to pick up Frankie. DiFrischia and Pam Dickey, also a member of Columbus Dog Connection, had put together a care package of Frankie's favorite toys and a blanket to help make his transition to a new home easier.

After the two women gave the family information about what Frankie did and didn't like, and ways to calm the timid dog's fears, the Birkinbines prepared to leave. Holding Frankie in her arms, Mrs. Birkinbine thanked DiFrischia for the little dog who had brought such happiness in such a short period of time. As Frankie and the Birkinbines left, DiFrischia's and Dickey's eyes filled with tears. "It was pretty emotional," DiFrischia said recently. "The shy and scared ones are always hard to let go because you're so afraid for them. I knew he was going to a wonderful home but I was worried how his first hours would be in a new place. I had gotten pretty attached to him because he'd had such a rough life.''

Eight months later, Frankie is thriving in his new home. "Everyone who has been around him loves him,'' Mrs.Birkinbine said. "He's really developed a personality and I never thought he would. He had been so scarred. But he has come a long way. He's brought so much joy to our family. He appreciates every ounce of love and he gives it back.''

Mrs. Birkinbine said she is impressed with Columbus Dog Connection and their mission. "They are so careful about who they place their dogs with," she said. "What they do is so wonderful and we are so thankful to them for Frankie."

DiFrischia said, "This is why we do what we do. It's incredibly rewarding and we know we are making a difference."

Some dogs rescued by Columbus Dog Connection remain with a foster parent indefinitely. "We don't set out to keep the dogs but if one isn't adopted we'll make a home for them,'' said Joyce Rice, a volunteer who has had Sabrina, a 10-year-old collie-mix, for 15 months. "She's a senior citizen and they are the hardest to place." The elderly man who owned Sabrina had to be placed in a nursing home after developing a brain tumor. "It's sad but true that the smaller, younger dogs are adopted first," said Rice, of the North Side. "Sabrina is a wonderful dog and I'd love to find her a home with an older person who has one dog. She would like that."

One of Columbus Dog Connection's foremost missions is to get out the message for early spaying and neutering. "Too many unwanted dogs are being born and it's unnecessary," DiFrischia said. She said all of the dogs adopted from Columbus Dog Connection have been sterilized. "It's a small step, but it's a beginning," DiFrischia said. "We know it's going to be a long journey to solve all of the problems of abused, neglected and abandoned animals but we're willing to take it one step at a time."

Hi Mirna, Well I finally  got around to the family portrait.  Look how huge my baby is!!!!  He is the best dog!  No accidents since what seems forever.  We don't even worry anymore.  He only chews his things and human arms, legs, etc.  He loves his home!  If you know anyone that needs a hole dug, we can hook you up.  Mr. barky bark can help.  We are starting to consider kindergarten soon since soccer is over.  Yes, Humphrey loved soccer games.  He feels like a superstar!  We love him.  Thank you so much for letting us adopt him.  Come by sometime he would love to kiss and jump all over you like he does everyone else.  I could spend a while telling you about some of his quarks.  He still doesn't go up or down stairs, I changed his water bowl to a larger one and all he does now is bark at it, bath time, I think he sleeps through.  At least he appears to be asleep.  What a cutie!!!  Anyway, we'll be in touch.  Let us know if you have any play dates or anything like that.

Take care,
Julie

I just got your email about fourth of July and I wanted to let you know that Alphie is doing great.  I have attached a couple of pictures.  I bought this little bed for Lollie (my jack russell) and Alphie has claimed it for his own, he squeezes in that little bed.  I don't know how he does it.  I attached a picture of him in the little bed.. It is the funniest thing.

He is still the greatest dog.  I also have two cats now that are part of the family.  He has no problem with them. Him and lollie are best friends too!  I am moving to Texas next week and all the animals are coming with.  So I am glad there is AC down there for all of them cuz it gets so hot.
I just wanted to give you an update and some pictures.  I know you adored Alphie.  I am so glad I got him, he is such a special dog.

Mirna, I was glad that you called to check on Louie.  He is great dog, and best buds with Cooper, and my 20mo. old son Ryan.  The three are nearly inseparable. I have attached a couple of pictures of Cooper and Louie through the years, and one of Louie, Coop, and their cousin (adopted in Toledo by my sister in law) Miele  (Pronounced Miley, means honey in Italian).

This is Porter and his sister Annabell…he’s the pup on the left.  They thought he was a Chihuahua/Rat Terrier mix but around 4 months old he grew long lanky legs and he now looks more like a Chihuahua, terrier, whippet mix.  He’s been one of the best things  that have happened in my life, as I’m sure everyone says about their dogs.  My fiancé, was in a horrible car accident back in March 2008.  It was like Porter knew something was up, he was by my side being quite the cuddle bug.  When Lee returned home the beginning of this month, Porter took right to him….he walks next to his wheelchair every step of the way, and is very careful not to get too jumpy around Lee.  Porter is a great dog, and I’m so grateful that I saw him on your website and fell in love with him.  He’s very spoiled, coming to work with me Monday-Friday and playing hard with the other dogs.  When he’s not at work he’s usually lounging around the house or romping around the dog park.

Noah’s Bark helped him to become the dog that he is today.  He’s been coming here since I brought him home, and his social skills show it.  He’s friendly around all dogs and people, and he absolutely loves coming to “work”.  I highly recommend daycare for puppies as well as adult dogs because it really helps acclimate them to the world they live in.
